Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) information is conveyed by special Ethernet packets and provides a mechanism useful for monitoring link operation such as remote fault indication and remote loopback.

• Provides network operators the ability to monitor the health of the network
• Allows the location of failing links or fault conditions to be identified
• OAM information is conveyed in Slow Protocol frames
• Not forwarded by MAC clients (e.g., bridges or switches)
